Cogglesford Mill

There is evidence of a Saxon mill on this site.  The present mill dates to the mid-18th century and was one of many other mills along the river.   The adjacent lock was built in the 1790s during the construction of Sleaford Navigation.   As the lock fell into disrepair, it was replaced by a weir which was designed to maintain a head of water for the still-working mill.

1791, Cogglesford Mill – Mrs & Mrs William Almond

Mary Almond was the daughter of Joseph Lee, a previous owner of the mill. She married William Almond in 1775 when he was acting as foreman miller. William and Mary managed the mill and other local businesses successfully at a time of great change when plans were afoot for the River Slea to be made navigable through to the River Witham and Boston. This led to major improvements in local commerce.
